I asked my girlfriend to marry me on a boat on the wide expanse of Lake George. There was no iPhone to capture the moment, no Twitter to tweet or Facebook to share, and, back at our campsite, no AT&T service to call home with the news. There were only s?mores. And champagne.

For the two of us, it was nice. But I?ll tell ya, future marrieds: the lull couldn?t last. Within minutes, we were in my Jeep, driving 10 miles out of the woods, where we sat on the shoulder of a road trying, to no avail, to make the engagement ?Facebook official.? (Turns out you can?t update your relationship status from the iPhone app. A Facebook spokesperson says the company plans on adding this feature in the future.) Lacking the digital evidence, we wondered, had it even happened?

With five weeks behind us and still a year out from the date, the engagement is as real as the ring. Our wedding now has a hashtag, a website in the works, and a growing list of potential vendors we?ve found online. Yelp is our beacon. Facebook our guide. (No surprise: in my day job I?m head of social media at Newsweek and The Daily Beast, managing accounts and watching for news.) My fianc?e has grown particularly fond of Pinterest, the photo-sharing network used by a whopping 19 percent of women on the Internet, per one recent Pew study. To my eyes, weddings are the central reason it exists. ?Pinterest is a tool people use to find inspiration for the important things they want to do in their life,? a spokesperson explained to me. ?Planning a wedding is a great example.? This past July, Pinterest doubled down, creating a separate category for weddings. The same month Facebook?its users aging into love and marriage?introduced a feature displaying special events, starting with engagements and weddings, alongside friends? birthdays when you log in. (Babies are there, too.)

The use of social media in wedding planning has risen fourfold in the past four years, according to a recent survey conducted by the wedding-planning sites The Knot and WeddingChannel.com. In it, nearly 50 percent of brides said they used social media to communicate information about their wedding, up from 23 percent in 2008. And Anja Winikka, The Knot?s site director, points out the slew of questions that now face the netiquette-aware bride. After the engagement, do you Instagram the ring or call your mother? On the big day, do you update your status before or after the first dance?

Sitting for protracted periods increases risk of diabetes, heart ...

A new study led by the University of Leicester, in association with colleagues at Loughborough University, has discovered that sitting for long periods increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease and death.

The study, which combined the results of 18 studies and included a total of 794,577 participants, was led by Dr. Emma Wilmot, a research fellow in the Diabetes Research Group at the University of Leicester. It was done in collaboration with colleagues from the newly established National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester-Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit and was published in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association of the Study of Diabetes.

According to the study, those who sit for long periods have a two fold increase in their risk of diabetes, heart disease and death. Importantly, associations were independent of the amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity undertaken, suggesting that even if an individual meets typical physical activity guidelines, their health may still be compromised if they sit for long periods of time throughout the day.

Dr Wilmot, a Clinical Research Fellow in Diabetes and Endocrinology based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, Leicester General Hospital, said: "The average adult spends 50-70% of their time sitting so the findings of this study have far reaching implications. By simply limiting the time that we spend sitting, we may be able to reduce our risk of diabetes, heart disease and death".

"Our study also showed that the most consistent associations were between sitting and diabetes. This is an important message because people with risk factors for diabetes, such as the obese, those of South Asian ethnic origin, or those with a family history of diabetes, may be able to help reduce their future risk of diabetes by limiting the time spent sitting. "

Professor Stuart Biddle, of Loughborough University, and a co-investigator on the study, said: "There are many ways we can reduce our sitting time, such as breaking up long periods at the computer at work by placing our laptop on a filing cabinet. We can have standing meetings, we can walk during the lunch break, and we can look to reduce TV viewing in the evenings by seeking out less sedentary behaviours."

Professor Melanie Davies, Professor of Diabetes Medicine at the University of Leicester and honorary consultant at University Hospitals of Leicester is a co-investigator and Director of the NIHR Leicester-Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit. She said:

"This paper has a very important message for the public but also for health care professionals - namely that being sedentary is common and dangerous for our long term health, particularly for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and that this link appears to be over and above other lifestyle factors such as our diet and physical activity."

Cluster bombs used on Syrian civilians, group says

Updated at 10:38 p.m. ET: Syrian government forces have dropped Soviet-made cluster bombs over civilian areas in the past week as they battle to push back rebel gains, Human Rights Watch said on Sunday.

The bombs were dropped from planes and helicopters, with many of the strikes taking place near the main north-south highway running through the northwestern town of Maarat al-Numan,?HRW said in a report.

"If we needed any further proof of the Syrian government's complete disregard for the lives of its own citizens, its own children, well, here it is. ?Because we know now that the government is using cluster munitions in populated areas," Philippe Bolopion?of Human Rights Watch said in a video statement. ?"And of course these weapons are extremely dangerous for the civilian population and the children."

The munitions, which first detonate in midair and release bomblets over a wide area, can remain active for years, the rights group said.?Children, who often pickup the munitions, are especially vulnerable to cluster bombs.?

Residents from Taftanaz and Tamanea -- both near Maarat al-Numan -- told HRW interviewers that helicopters dropped cluster munitions on or near their towns last Tuesday. One that hit Tamanea released smaller bomblets in an area between two schools, a resident was quoted as saying in the HRW report.

"The bomblets that exploded were the ones that hit the ground on the tip, we collected the ones that didn't explode, their tip didn't touch the ground," the resident said.

HRW previously reported Syrian use of cluster bombs, which have been banned by most countries but not Syria, in July and August but the renewed strikes indicate the government's determination to regain strategic control in the northwest.

Researchers identified the the munitions as Soviet-made RBK-250, which would be particularly dangerous because old weapons are less likely to detonate on impact,?Bolopion said. New York-based HRW did not know how or when Syria acquired the munitions.

Rebels seized Maarat al-Numan from President Bashar Assad's troops last week, cutting the route from the capital Damascus to Aleppo, Syria's biggest city. Government forces have been trying to retake the area since then.

Towns targeted included Maarat, Tamanea, Taftanaz and al-Tah. Cluster bombs were also used in other areas in Homs, Aleppo and Lattakia provinces as well as near Damascus, the rights group said.

Initial information about the use of the explosives came from videos posted online by opposition activists although HRW investigators said it had confirmed the incidents in interviews with resident in two towns.

People were taking away unexploded bomblets as souvenirs, a highly dangerous action as they can still explode at the slightest touch or movement. Video showed some civilians carrying the bomblets around and throwing them on the ground.

"The cluster munition strikes and unexploded ordnance they leave behind pose a huge danger to civilian populations, who often seem unaware how easily these submunitions could still explode," Goose said.

Syrian government officials were not immediately available to comment on the HRW report.

Meanwhile,?Turkey banned all Syrian aircraft from its air space on Sunday, days after intercepting a Syrian airliner carrying what it said were Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army.

Asked if Syrian aircraft were now banned from Turkish air space, a Foreign Ministry official said: "Yes, civilian aircraft. Military aircraft were de facto banned way before."

Syria said on Saturday that it was banning Turkish civilian flights over its territory.

Harnessing Thought to Defeat Paralysis: Brain-Computer Interface

Tim Hemmes, of Butler, Penn., has been paralyzed from the neck down for eight years following a motorcycle accident. He is able to speak normally and looks like a regular, if thin, 31-year-old, sitting about a foot taller than the scientist around him because of his mobile chair. His arms have been resting at the sides of that chair for eight years.

Then on October 2011, he thought about reaching out to his girlfriend? and a robotic arm next to him extended and did it.

In the second panel of the 2012 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards, Wei Wang, Michael Boninger, and Andrew Schwartz of the University if Pittsburgh talked to PM contributing editor Logan Ward about their newest success in developing a brain-computer interface, or BCI, which finally allowed Hemmes to move again, if through a robotic prosthesis.

"The doctor was asking me why I wanted to be the subject of this trial," Tim Hemmes says, "and I said, I was happy with my life, raising my daughter, rescuing pit bulls, but I still remember what everything feels like. She was drinking from a water bottle, and I remembered exactly what it felt like to wrap my fingers around that bottle, to feel the crunch of the thin plastic. I wanted that feeling back."

The BCI concept, first brokered 40 years ago, was largely confined to the realm of possibility until this group of doctors and engineers made a leap forward into reality last October. "It worked. All this hard work and it worked," remembers Boninger, the lead physician on the trial.

BCIs were first mentioned in scientific literature in the 70s. Six years ago PM gave a Breakthrough award to Brain Gate, the first project to have real world success by training a patient to control the movement of a cursor on a screen with his mind. In 2010 a version of that device became commercially available, leaving the Pitt team to figure out how to build on it.

"The only way I know what?s going on in the place between your ears is by how you move," Schwartz, neurobiologist and another leader of the team, says. Schwartz has been working to decode brain activity for decades. But only now has he and his team developed the ability to take in signals from many neurons at once. "When you move, billions of neurons are at work at once," Schwartz says. He compares it to listening to the roar of the crowd from outside a stadium ? you hear the whole attitude, but not individual voices.

Boninger, like many involved in the project, is a doctor and engineer, at the nexus of medicine and engineering. The two groups could collaborate on research more often, according to him. "They don?t talk enough, but when they do great stuff happens." In the case of a spinal cord injury like Hemmes suffered, the mind can generate a thought of movement, but the signal can?t travel past the break in the cord. The Pitt team fused many fields of science to decode the neural signals of a thought and restructure it into a robotic command, bypassing the spinal injury. And they had only 30 days before Hemmes?s brain implants would be taken out.

Hemmes remembers the first day he moved the arm. He watched it move on its own for a while, then, with all the researchers standing around, they finally plugged him in. "I was just thinking, and the arm moved, and then the room erupted. People were calling DARPA and DC."

That moment was the result of a grueling training regimen?two two-hour sessions per day six days a week, in which Hemmes moved a virtual ball around a 3D screen with his mind so doctors could parse his brain signals. "Trying to move something you can?t move is mentally exhausting," he says.

Boninger says: "In 14 days this project took off. If we had a year, what could we accomplish?" He expects a clinically useful device resulting from the research to be available in 5 to 10 years. "We?re building off of what we have, which is something that really happened." But until they can achieve meaningful sensory feedback from the arm, he doesn?t think it is good enough for patients at large. "Movement is great, but sensation is exponentially more beautiful."

Mike McLaughlin, an electrical engineer at Johns Hopkins University, led the team of engineers in what was originally a separate project?the DARPA-funded robotic arm, which has 26 degrees of freedom. Although the technology for below-the-knee prosthetics is very advanced, most upper extremities amputees still wear a hook. "We wanted to create an arm that could move individual fingers, and lift 40 to 50 pounds," says McLaughlin.

The arm was hooked up to an electrocorticography grid?small metal disk electrodes laid on top of Hemmes?s brain. "It?s actually very simple technology, used for 50 years," says Wei Wang, a doctor and engineer who oversaw the day-to-day project. The same basic method has been used to gather brain activity from seizure or epilepsy patients. "It?s basically a translator, turning neural activity into a robotic command," says Wang.

The next step is to graduate to flexible materials for the brain implants, which could be left in permanently.

Facebook: Pay up if you want more friends to see your status updates

Facebook's Abhishek Doshi explains that the social network is testing a feature which allows users to promote their personal posts for a fee.?This feature was initially tested in New Zealand and several other countries over the last few months (which is why we've heard scattered reports about it), but now it's finally available in the United States.

The way these "promoted posts" work is that you click a link?? labeled "promote"???under the post you're interested in highlighting. You'll be asked to fork over some amount of money,?which the Verge's Ellis Hamburger says will be about $7 per post, and that's it.

"Sometimes a particular friend might not notice your post,?especially if a lot of their friends have been posting recently and your story isn?t near the top of their feed." Doshi writes.?When you fork over cash to highlight a post, Facebook will "bump it higher in news feed so your friends and subscribers are more likely to notice it."

It seems that the folks at Facebook aren't presenting promoted posts as something you should want to use every day. Instead the feature is intended as a way to promote significant events or posts. (Perhaps wedding announcements or posts asking folks if they saw your lost cat.)

An additional perk of paying to promote posts is that you'll be able to see some statistics about how useful the "paid views" were. I suppose this could serve as a way to prevent buyer's remorse after you fail to get a hundred comments on a post despite paying to promote it.

Businesses have been able to use the promoted posts feature for a while, to promote content from their Pages. When it comes to regular users, only those with fewer than 5,000 friends and subscribers are included in the initial test.
