Old Dominion 300x289 Airing it out: NCAA Old Dominions Heinicke sets D I single game record

Everything about NCAA football is exciting, especially when you realize that these young men are fighting to play every?Sunday.? Taylor Heinicke not only proved that? but turned heads while doing it.

Taylor Heinicke set a Division I record by passing for 730 yards as Old Dominion rallied to beat New Hampshire 64-61 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.

Heinicke was 55 for 79, setting school records for both, and coming two completions short of the FCS record. David Klingler of Houston had the Division I record of 716 yards passing against Arizona State on Dec. 2, 1990.

Earlier this season, Sam Durley, of Eureka (Ill.) College, set the NCAA single-game mark with 736 passing yards in a 62-55 win against Knox in a Division II game.

Heinicke, a sophomore from Atlanta, has thrown for 1,921 and 19 touchdowns for Old Dominion (4-0).

Now of course New Hampshire isn?t an Alabama or any type of big school what so ever, but to throw for that many yards still deserves to have some recognition.

New Hampshire (2-2) dominated the CAA?s top-ranked defense throughout the first three quarters, taking a 54-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

However, Heinicke threw for two touchdowns to Nick Mayers and Angus Harper scored on a 2-yard run, capping a 23-0 scoring run for the Monarchs. Mayers hauled in 12 passes for 271 yards.

The Wildcats rallied, tying the game 61-all behind a 45-yard pass from Andy Vailas, but Heinicke led the Monarchs on an 11-play, 74-yard drive that ended with Jared Brown?s game-winning 25-yard field goal.

Old Dominion has outscored opponents 132-24 in the second half this season. (Courtesy of CBSSports.com)

Pay close attention to this young man, he could be a late round pick up for one of your teams in the NFL someday. Once again 730 yards! Good job young man!

National grocery chain Trader Joe?s is voluntarily recalling ?peanut butter that has been linked to 29 salmonella cases in 18 states.

?Out of an abundance of caution, we have removed all?Trader Joe?s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter from sale, due to pending health-related inquiries,? Trader Joe?s said in a statement.

An investigation by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control determined the peanut butter was the likely source of the outbreak. Officials from the FDA and CDC briefed Trader Joe?s on Thursday, prompting the grocer to voluntarily recall the product, the FDA said in a statement issued Saturday.

The list of states that reported the illnesses was not released, but the state health departments in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and North Carolina reported cases, according to The Associated Press.

Anyone with the product is encouraged to either return it to Trader Joe?s for a full refund or dispose of it.

Salmonella causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain 12 to 72 hours after infection. Young children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems are most at risk to developing severe infections.

Kevin Pietersen hopeful for selection in New Zealand tour ? Cricket News Update

Exiled England batsman Kevin Pietersen has expressed the hope that his ongoing stand-off with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will reach a speedy resolution, paving the way for his selection in England?s tour of New Zealand next year.

?Hoping all's sorted and I'm on the NZ tour in Feb,? Pietersen said during a Twitter conversation with New Zealand rugby player Dan Carter on Friday. England are due to tour New Zealand next year in February/March, for a series of 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and 3 Tests.

Prior to the Pietersen's Twitter conversation, team captain Alastair Cook had confirmed that in addition to having met up with the out-of-favour batsman himself, talks between Pietersen and the England team management were still ongoing, with Hugh Morris and David Collier in Sri Lanka, were Pietersen is working as a TV pundit during the ongoing ICC World Twenty20.

?I did have a meeting with Kev ... Time, hopefully, will be a healer and we'll be able to move on,? said Cook, maintaining an optimistic outlook. ?At the present time, though, the issues haven't been resolved so he can't be selected.?

Following the worsening of the spat between the two parties, Pietersen was not only excluded from the line-up for the final Test against South Africa in a series played last month, but also from the squad for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012. Player of the Match from England?s 2009-10 World T20 triumph, Pietersen?s exclusion from the team illustrated the severity of the situation.

Speculations regarding the right-hander?s inclusion in the Test squad for England?s all-important tour of India later this year arose, but discussions between the two sides had not reached a sufficiently satisfactory conclusion, according to Cook, and as a result, Pietersen was not selected.

?It's sad that ... we're not taking Kevin to India, but that is the reality,? Cook said. Pietersen has since gone on to express his disappointment with the board?s decision to exclude him.

?We are trying to do what is best for English cricket,? the newly-appointed Test captain went on to add. ?I think he can play for England again, certainly, but there are still issues to be resolved and until that happens he is unavailable.?

Pietersen announced his retirement from international limited-overs cricket earlier this year ? a decision which he went on to retract, but which triggered a series of events that have led to his falling-out with the ECB.

Representatives from some 150 Venezuelan and Argentine companies met in the past week in Caracas to discuss possible joint projects with Venezuelan state oil firm PDVSA in the Orinoco heavy oil belt.

The meeting aims to build up private sector support for increasing energy ties between the two countries.

"It's very important that you accompany us in this massive integration and strengthening of relations," Argentine planning minister Julio de Vido told executives at the Thursday (Sep 13) meeting, according to a PDVSA release.

The partnership between the two governments has been spurred on by Argentine oil firm YPF's nationalization in April this year, as well as Venezuela's admittance in July to the Southern Cone trading bloc Mercosur, of which Argentina is also a member.

Since then, YPF has said it would participate in the Orinoco belt, while raising the possibility of PDVSA's involvement in the yet-to-be-developed offshore industry in Argentina.

The Orinoco contains some 90% of Venezuela's 296Bb reserves, according to the PDVSA release.

A recent report by financial services firm Citigroup predicted that Venezuela's oil production will remain flat this year at 2.3-2.4Mb/d, adding that any long-term increases will depend on projects in the Orinoco belt.

The oil sector accounts for about 95% of the country's export earnings and 12% of GDP.

Quality-of-life program may help cancer patients

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A therapy program focused on improving quality of life can help people being treated for advanced cancer, researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, have found.

Patients who attended the sessions - a combination of physical and talk therapy, along with relaxation techniques and spiritual discussions - reported a stable quality of life during treatment, while cancer patients who didn't get the extra help declined on those measures.

Researchers said that although such comprehensive programs might not be available at smaller cancer centers, doctors can still help patients seek out spiritual or emotional help, or encourage them to be more physically active.

"Dealing with a cancer diagnosis is a big stressor for lots of people. It's still a really scary health diagnosis," said psychologist Matthew Clark, the lead author on the new study.

What's more, he said, patients are dealing with the side effects of treatment, and many with the additional stress of being away from their families and friends if they don't live near a cancer center.

His team's study involved 131 patients with advanced colon, brain and lung cancers, all of whom were diagnosed within the last year and being treated with radiation therapy.

Clark and his colleagues randomly assigned patients to undergo six 90-minute sessions aimed at improving their physical, mental and spiritual quality of life or to be treated with standard medical care.

Patients attended most of the sessions along with their primary caregiver.

When researchers surveyed patients about their quality of life four weeks later, people who had gone through the program scored a 75 on a 0-to-100 scale, on average, compared to a 69 for the standard-care group.

However, six months later - after a series of follow-up phone calls for the therapy group - cancer patients reported their quality of life at around 77 or 78, regardless of whether they'd gotten the extra support.

Allison Applebaum, a clinical psychologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, said she sees many patients who are struggling with depression and anxiety as well as existential issues during cancer treatment.

"A lot of patients also present with some symptoms of post-traumatic stress," Applebaum, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health.

"With cancer comes a lot of role changes and losses, such as loss of the ability to work, perhaps the loss of a relationship (and) loss of physical capacity."

NO BENEFIT FOR CAREGIVERS

The Mayo Clinic program didn't have any impact on how caregivers reported their own quality of life, the researchers wrote in the journal Cancer.

At the end of the study, caregivers said they would have preferred a caregivers-only therapy group, as well as specific strategies on how they could improve their own quality of life.

Applebaum noted that rates of depression can be just as high if not higher in caregivers than in cancer patients. In 2011, she started a clinic targeted solely toward caregivers.

While more researchers are recognizing the importance of treating the mental and emotional needs of people with cancer, there are still limitations to reaching everyone who could benefit.

"Likely such structured, well-supervised interventions may not be available at smaller cancer centers," Applebaum said. But that doesn't mean it isn't possible - especially if social workers and nurse practitioners are recruited to lead the sessions.

And some people without any access to such services may be able to get counseling over the phone or Internet, she added.

Clark said patients can ask their oncologists what types of resources are available to help them cope with cancer and their treatment - from chaplains to exercise programs - and decide what's best for them.

"Think about what really helps you maintain your quality of life," he said.

"Caring for cancer is not just caring for the body," Applebaum emphasized. "Attending to quality of life, the mental health, the spiritual components, is really important."

Tim Huelskamp, GOP Congressman: Planned Parenthood's 'Sole Purpose Is Killing Children' Of Minorities

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.), who has four adoptive children of African American, Hispanic, and Native American descent, said on Friday that Planned Parenthood "was created for the sole purpose of killing children that look like mine."

?Like the pro-slavery forces who invaded Kansas, the pro-abortion forces in Washington and elsewhere want us to believe that abortion is not murder -- that being born is worse than death, that the unborn baby is property, not a person," Huelskamp said at the 2012 Values Voter Summit, where vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) also spoke.

Huelskamp criticized Obama and the Democrats for wanting to fund Planned Parenthood, adding, "I am incensed that this president pays money to an entity that was created for the sole purpose of killing children that look like mine -- a racist organization, and it continues specifically to target minorities for abortion destruction. Shame on this president and shame on that party.?

Planned Parenthood is often accused of being racist because its founder, Margaret Sanger, was tied in the early 1900s to the eugenics movement, which discouraged mentally disabled people and people with hereditary diseases from reproducing. A number of race-baiting billboard campaigns have cited the disproportionately high incidence of abortions among black women as further evidence that Planned Parenthood and pro-abortion rights proponents are targeting minorities, although statistics suggest that economic circumstances more likely account for the disparity than race does.

Planned Parenthood was not immediately available for comment on Friday, but has unequivocally denied accusations of racism. The family-planning provider sponsored the 2012 ESSENCE Music Festival in August, one of the largest African-American entertainment and cultural events in the U.S.

?African Americans have higher rates of many preventable diseases, including cancers, diabetes, heart disease and sexually transmitted infections,? said Dr. Vanessa Cullins, vice president for external medical affairs at Planned Parenthood, said in August. ?Planned Parenthood wants to help African Americans get and stay healthy, and the Essence Music Festival is a terrific place to engage with and educate people about how to live healthier lives."

Update: 4:18 p.m. --

Veronica Byrd, director of African-American media for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said Huelskamp?s inflammatory attack against Planned Parenthood is "wrong on the facts" and "unacceptable."

?Planned Parenthood condemns racism or discrimination in any form. It is not what we stand for or work for," she said. "Rep. Tim Huelskamp cannot possibly understand the complex decision for a woman who is considering whether to raise a child, choose adoption or end a pregnancy. That decision should be made by a woman, her family, and her faith, with the counsel of her doctor or health care provider."

She added, "It is simply unacceptable for those who oppose safe and legal abortion to use inflammatory and divisive language based on race to push an ideological agenda."

Russia warns against attacking Iran over nuclear fears

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has starkly warned Israel and the United States against attacking Iran, saying Moscow sees no evidence that Tehran's nuclear program is aimed at developing weapons, the Interfax news agency reported on Thursday.

"We warn those who are no strangers to military solutions ... that this would be harmful, literally disastrous for regional stability," Interfax quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying.

An attack on Iran "would set off deep shocks in the security and economic spheres that would reverberate far beyond the boundaries of the Middle East region," Ryabkov was quoted as saying.

Russian officials have issued similar warnings in the past, but Ryabkov's remarks appeared to underscore Moscow's concern about the possibility that Israel might attack Iranian nuclear facilities.

Heightened Israeli rhetoric about the facilities, which Western powers believe are part of a program to develop a nuclear weapons capability, has stoked speculation that Israel may attack Iran before the U.S. presidential election in November.

Ryabkov said there were no indications of a military nuclear program and suggested monitoring by the U.N. nuclear agency was a strong guarantee.

"We, as before, see no signs that there is a military dimension to Iran's nuclear program. No signs," Interfax quoted Ryabkov - Russia's point man for diplomacy on Iran's nuclear program - as saying.

"We see something different - that there is nuclear material ... in Iran that is under the control of inspectors, specialists of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"This nuclear material is not being shifted to military needs, this is officially confirmed by the (IAEA)."

His remarks appeared to be at odds with mounting concern voiced by the U.N. atomic watchdog about possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program.

The IAEA said last week that Iran had doubled the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges in an underground bunker in a few months, showing it continued to expand its nuclear program despite sanctions and the threat of an Israeli attack. The new machines are not yet operating, it added.

It also said that in the last decade, it had become "increasingly concerned about the possible existence in Iran of undisclosed nuclear-related activities involving military related organizations".

Nuclear proliferation expert Mark Fitzpatrick, director of the International Institute of Strategic Studies think-tank and a former senior U.S. state department official, said that on one level Ryabkov's remarks were in line with Western views.

"If ... he means (Russia sees) no evidence that Iran is aiming to cross the threshold from capability to weapons production, then Ryabkov's statement is the same as the collective view of the United States and its European allies.

"But Ryabkov goes too far in giving Iran the benefit of the doubt when he says Russia sees no signs of a military dimension ... Maybe he means that the evidence is not yet confirmed. But there are certainly ample 'signs'," he said.

"Surely Russian intelligence is not so blind."

While Russia is a partner of the United States and four other powers in diplomatic efforts to ensure Tehran does not acquire nuclear weapons, it says the West is undermining those efforts with sanctions and the threat of attack.

"In recent times the tendency to use sanctions to achieve aims that are beyond reach in principle by means of pressure has become a passion that ... politicians on both sides of the Atlantic cannot overcome," Interfax quoted Ryabkov as saying.

A permanent U.N. Security Council member with veto power, Russia says it opposes further sanctions beyond the measures approved in four Security Council resolutions, the most recent in 2010.

Bottom trawling wrecking ocean floor, study finds

Bottom trawling, the practice of dragging nets across the sea floor to scoop up fish, is smoothing out the seabed and kicking up sediment, seriously disrupting marine ecosystems, according to a new study.?

Bottom trawling by fishermen, long believed to harm marine life, may be even more damaging than previously thought, affecting the seabed as seriously as intensive ploughing of farmland erodes the soil, according to a new Spanish study.

Bottom trawling - dragging nets across the sea floor to scoop up fish - stirs up the sediment lying on the seabed, displaces or harms some marine species, causes pollutants to mix into plankton and move into the food chain and creates harmful algae blooms or oxygen-deficient dead zones.

Scientists from the Marine Sciences Institute in Barcelona and the University of Barcelona found that trawling displaced sea floor sediment and made the seabed smoother over time.

"Bottom trawling has been compared to forest clear-cutting, although our results suggest that a better comparison might be intensive agricultural activities," they said in a study published on the journal Nature's website on Wednesday.

During the 20th century, more intensive farming techniques and changes in land use reduced the diversity of landscapes almost everywhere, the study said.

Ploughing up land exposes the top soil to erosion by wind and water, destroying or weakening nutrients in the soil which are essential for many plant species to survive.

Fishing has also become increasingly industrial. As technology has improved and traditional fish stocks have been depleted, trawling fleets have gone into ever deeper waters in search of fish.

As with soil, the seabed is composed of layers of sediment, holding nutrients that are vital for marine life.

In the study, the scientists measured the movement of sediments on the sea floor caused by fishing activities in a submarine canyon in the northwest Mediterranean Sea.

Deep-sea trawling became fully industrialised in the region in the 1960s and 180 large bottom trawlers currently operate to depths of 800 metres or more.

The scientists linked daily sediment movement to the passage of the trawling fleet, and found some of the movement was similar in size to the sediment transport caused by winter storms in nearby submarine canyons.

Using satellite navigation tracks from bottom trawlers operating in the area, they found the tracks coincided with smoothed parts of the canyon at depths shallower than 800 metres.

Untrawled parts of the canyon, by contrast, were dominated by a network of valleys.

"The frequent repeated trawling (ploughing) over the same ground, involving displacement of sediments owing to mechanical redistribution, ultimately causes the levelling of the surface and produces morphological effects similar to those of a (ploughed) farmer's field," the study said.

Marine ecosystems are also under threat from global warming, rising sea levels, acidification and changes in ocean circulation.

The scientists argue that the ecological impact of trawling and its influence on changes to the submarine landscape should also be considered a danger.

Islamists installed in Egypt state institutions

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist leadership took a new move Tuesday to put its stamp on the country's government, appointing members of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood as provincial governors and installing ultraconservatives and other Islamists in the state's top human rights body and a powerful media council.

The shake-up was the latest step by President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood to reshape state institutions that were long the monopoly of ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak, his ruling party and the military that backed him.

Supporters have praised the moves as part of a drive to cleanse the system of Mubarak loyalists after Morsi was inaugurated in late June as the country's first freely elected president. But the heavy infusion of Islamists into government institutions has raised fears of Brotherhood domination monopolizing power as much as Mubarak did and moving Egypt into a more religious rule.

The governorships of Egypt's 27 provinces have long been prime posts for solidifying the president's power. The governors are appointed by the president and generally implement his policies. Under Mubarak, the positions went to retired military generals or ruling party loyalists.

On Tuesday, Morsi's office announced 10 new governors. Four of the new names are leading members of the Brotherhood, taking the posts in the southern provinces of Minya and Assiout ? two areas with heavy Christian populations ? and the Nile Delta provinces of Kafr el-Sheikh and Menoufia, a stronghold of former regime supporters.

In a gesture to Egypt's still powerful military, three of the new governors are retired generals.

Presidential spokesman Yasser Ali said the new governors were chosen based their "good reputation, not party affiliation."

Another significant shakeup came in the National Council for Human Rights, a body that Mubarak created in his final years in response to demands for greater respect for human rights. The council, once headed by former U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, was touted as a rights watchdog over the government. Other rights groups dismissed it as toothless. However after the revolution, it played an active role in proposing to parliament bills against torture and discrimination against Christians and formed fact-finding missions to investigate killings of anti-military protesters.

The new 27-member council includes at least seven Islamists, including several members of the ultraconservative Salafi movement, which advocates a strict, segregationist interpretation of Islam similar to Saudi Arabia's.

Many Salafis have voiced opposition to international human rights treaties as "Westernized" standards and to many women's rights advocates they feel are un-Islamic. They also oppose equal political rights between Muslims and Christians.

Only two members in the new lineup are known as longtime human rights advocates, said Bahy Eddin Hassan, who heads the Arab Center for Human Rights Studies and is not among those on the council. The lineup includes three women ? two of whom are Christians ? and a third Christian.

"For the first time, we see a council tasked to defend human rights while its members are opponents to human rights," he said.

One of the two rights activists on the council, Ahmed Seif al-Islam, acknowledged the lack of representatives from established Egyptian rights groups, or from youth or women. But he said the council's leader, former senior judge Hossam el-Gharyani, will be able to strike a balance.

"I am optimistic," Seif al-Islam, a prominent rights lawyer, told The Associated Press. "Egyptians became part of the political equation, and the president and his party are in power based on people's will. This gives us a big space to move and play a role."

The new council was formed by the upper house of parliament, the Shura Council, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Shura Council also reshuffled the High Press Council, a state-body in charge of overseeing media regulations, introducing several Islamist politicians as members.

It was the latest move to reshape the state-run newspapers that under Mubarak were mouthpieces for the regime's fierce anti-Brotherhood campaigns. Last month, the Shura Council replaced 50 chief editors of state papers, installing Islamists or Brotherhood sympathizers.

In less than three months in office, Morsi has moved to solidify his authority. He removed top military generals who ruled Egypt after last year's uprising and fired the heads of intelligence and the presidential and Republican guard forces.

He named a team of 21 advisers and aides that are mostly Islamist-leaning figures, including only three women and two Christians, despite campaign promises to appoint a Christian and a woman as vice presidents.

"We are in an era that we can describe as 'Ikhwanization' by which the Muslim Brotherhood is imposing control over state institutions," Hassan said, using the Arabic word for the Brotherhood, "Ikhwan."

Meanwhile, Egyptian authorities charged Mubarak's longtime culture minister with corruption and referred him to trial, the latest prosecution of a figure from the ousted regime, the state news agency reported.

During a Justice Ministry investigation, Farouq Hosni, who served as culture minister for most of Mubarak's 29 year-rule, allegedly failed to account for the equivalent of $3 million of his wealth. He is being asked to return the money to the state.

Hosni joins some three dozen stalwarts of the Mubarak regime who face corruption charges. Some of them have been convicted, while others are still on trial.

The Justice Ministry officials also said that Mubarak, his wife and two children were being investigated for new corruption allegations pertaining to the purchase of land in the Nile Delta north of Cairo at a small fraction of its market value. No new charges have brought against any of the four yet.

Mubarak is already serving a life sentence on a conviction of complicity in the killing of hundreds of protesters during last year's uprising against his rule. His two sons, onetime heir apparent Gamal and wealthy businessman Alaa, are on trial for insider trading. The two were questioned last month over their 1993 purchase of a plot of land from a housing association led at the time by Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister and longtime friend who unsuccessfully ran for president against Morsi.
